30 August Monday: Bampton Classical Opera, Paris and Helen (Gluck) Westonbirt School, 6.00pm (members to make their own arrangements) 

6 September Monday: Zoom lecture by Simon Rees on Madam Butterfly 7.00 pm.

26 September Sunday: WNO Madam Butterfly, 4.00 Millennium Theatre, Cardiff ( please see web page)

18  October Monday: zoom lecture by Simon Rees on The Barber of Seville 7.00 pm

21 October, Thursday: WNO The Barber of Seville, 7.15, Hippodrome. Birmingham (please see web page)

 15 November Monday : zoom lecture by Kevin Stephens on musical motifs in Wagner's The Ring  (preliminary to complete 'The Cheltenham Ring' in February 2022) 7.00 pm.

 December ( Monday 6 or13 date tbc, subject to Covid restrictions): re-opening of the Society, a festive evening with wine and mince pies and a screening of Mike Leigh's film Topsy Turvy (about the inception, rehearsal and first staging of The Mikado. 


January date and venue tbc: The Enchanted Island. (Metropolitan Opera). This is a  pastiche of Shakespearean comedy with music selected from baroque opera and with a magnificent cast. 

February date and venue tbc: COS plans to complete the interrupted Ring  cycle with Gotterdammerung 

We hope to recommence opera trips when companies announce their programmes for 2022.

Information about ETO:  ETO are touring Armidigi (Handel) this Autumn. There is a concert performance at Great Malvern Priory (October 19) and staged performances at Leamington Spa (23 October) and Bradford on Avon (27 October)  Any members individually interested, please consult the website:

ETO plan to arrange a performance of Bach, St John Passion with local choirs (date and venue tbc)  and a season at The Everyman with La Boheme and The Golden Cockerel (arrangements tbc). ETO are eager to re-establish their links with COS.

Bijou Opera

We have made reciprocal arrangements with Bijou Opera for members to attend each others events in Cheltenham at cost until Christmas. Bijou meet in the Stanton Rooms in Charlton Kings. Doors open 2.00 pm; screening commences 2.30 pm; refreshments included in the ticket price. Their programme of dvds is: Sunday 22 August, La Forza del Destino (Verdi); Monday 23 August, Eugene Onegin (Tchaikovsky); Tuesday 24 August, Cosi fan Tutte (Mozart); Sundays 19 &26 September. Semiramide (Rossini) Sundays 14 &21 November, Fidelio (Beethoven).
